Conversation Shifts from Pandemic to Protests

The explosive fallout over George Floyd’s death has taken over the national conversation, shifting attention from the pandemic to the protests.

Over the weekend when unrest spread across the country, there were four times as many tweets about Floyd as there were about COVID-19.

On Google, we saw some of the highest-trending topics also related to Floyd as users searched for “Justice for George” and “how to be antiracist.”

The coronavirus conversation on Twitter has remained relatively stable in the past week amid the nationwide protests, hovering around 4 million. Meanwhile, the tweets about Floyd have spiked significantly since his May 25th death, reaching nearly 18 million mentions on Sunday.
